Sony Ericsson announces LiveView

Sometimes we hear about new gadgets and can’t decide if it is the coolest or lamest thing we’ve ever seen.  It can seem like such an awesome idea, but is it something you’d actually use?
This was our first reaction to the Sony Ericsson LiveView, although the more we think about it, the more we think it’s an awesome idea.
The LiveView is a device with a 1.3 inch 128×128 OLED screen which displays data from the apps on your Android device. It connects via bluetooth  and in addition to being used as a remote control for your music player; it can display RSS and Twitter feeds, calendar information as well as missed/incoming calls and SMS messages. The LiveView will also come with a very useful ‘find your phone’ feature.  Given that this is a bluetooth device, that is only going to useful for finding it in your house rather than if it gets stolen, but it is still quite a nice feature.
In addition to everything it can do out of the box, the LiveView can be enabled on any Android app built for Android 2.0 or above.  This means that the power of the device will increase as more developers get on board and add support for the LiveView.
Due to the fact LiveView uses bluetooth connect, it should work with just about any device running Android 2.x.  You won’t have to have a Sony Ericson Android phone to be able to use it. At least, that’s the theory – at the moment Sony Ericsson has only got the Samsung Glalaxy S and the HTC Desire listed as compatible non Sony Ericsson phones.
There’s definitely still a part of us which wonders what we’d actually use it for that would be worth whatever Sony Ericsson decides to charge for it.  That said, the potential of it is pretty exciting and it will definitely be worth watching this space!

Skype and Facebook to Announce Partnership [RUMOR]

Facebook and Skype are working on a deal that would integrate Facebook Connect with Skype accounts; All ThingsD has learned citing sources familiar with the situation.
ATD has managed to get a hold of a screenshot showing the new features in action: once you connect Skype withFacebook, you’d be able to SMS, chat with or call your Facebook friends directly from Skype. You should also be able to login into Skype with your Facebook credentials.
The new features should go live in Skype 5.0 when the new version goes out of beta in a couple of weeks.
It’s a logical step for both companies. Facebook’s chat capabilities are somewhat limited compared to Google Talk, which is deeply integrated with Gmail, and offers voice and video chat capabilities. Enabling new ways to communicate with yourFacebook friends is definitely one of Facebook’s goals. Skype, on the other hand, will be very happy to extend its user base with Facebook’s 500+ million users.
If the rumor turns out to be true, it would be interesting to see whether Facebook will also integrate Skype features into its web interface, or perhaps its mobile application.

Official: Easypaisa will Offer Savings/Insurance product

As we have reported before, it is now official that Telenor will offer saving/insurance accounts through Easypaisa, company’s mobile banking brand.
Telenor in a statement today has said that it has received a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Mobile Money for the Unbanked (MMU) Fund. With the help of the grant, Telenor Pakistan will introduce a savings/ insurance product under the umbrella of its easypaisa services.
MMU grants are awarded to support commercially viable and sustainable mobile-operator-led projects that accelerate the deployment of mobile banking services to the unbanked. This year only seven mobile operators have been selected from around the world for the grants based on their financial services.
Gavin Krugel, Director GSMA speaking about the MMU Fund said: “Between now and the end of 2011 millions of consumers are expected to directly benefit from mobile money services launched with the support of the Fund – that is 170 million customers at the base of the economic pyramid and who previously lacked access to financial services, from 19 operators in Latin America, Africa, and Asia.”
Commenting on the grant, Roar Bjaerum, Vice President Financial Services, Telenor Pakistan said: “We are delighted to have received the MMU grant. Easypaisa has very quickly gained popularity among all segments of society. Through it we have moved over PKR2 billion through more than a million transactions. Considering that only 12% of the population in the country has access to banking services, the MMU grant is going to help us develop a savings and insurance product that is tailored to the needs of the financially excluded.”
easypaisa is a diverse suite of financial services launched by Telenor Pakistan and Tameer Microfinance Bank with the aim to provide mobile banking services to the unbanked people of Pakistan.
The MMU Fund is administered by the GSMA Foundation Inc and supported by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It works with mobile operators, banks, microfinance institutions, government and development organizations to encourage the expansion of reliable and affordable mobile financial services to base-of-the-pyramid unbanked customers.

NSN Demos its LTE Products in Pakistan

NSN Logo 300x163 NSN Demos its LTE Products in Pakistan
Nokia Siemens Network has demonstrated the Long-Term Evolution (LTE) products in a Road show in Pakistan. Earlier this month, NSN had showcased its third generations products in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt and Morocco.
During the demonstration Nokia Siemens Network’s Country Director in Pakistan said that the timing of our road show could not be more opportune.
“With Pakistan’s telecommunication industry witnessing strong growth, the need for a richer communications services in Pakistan is raising the demand for 3G and 4G. New services now and in the future require higher speeds at an affordable cost.”
It is clear that broadband can change Pakistan as it connects rural businesses and consumers to the rest of the world, enables new ways of doing business and adds agility to urban enterprises.
In fact as per a Broadband Survey conducted by Nokia Siemens Networks in 2009, the desire to use mobile and data applications in Pakistan- surfing the web and application downloading – reaches up to 55 percent of the population.
Usage of audio /music mobile downloading alone has shown an interest rate of 88 percent.
LTE is the de-facto evolution path of the 3G mobile standard that is based on a full flat IP architecture and is optimized for data and multimedia traffic.
Having demonstrated the world’s first LTE demo with data speeds up to 160 Mb/s, Nokia Siemens Networks has been at the forefront of developments in this space.
In Middle East Africa specifically, Nokia Siemens Networks was behind the region’s first LTE contract with Zain Bahrain. “Leading the evolution of broadband technology means our customers will be the first to benefit,” added Waraich.
“Today, we are reinforcing our vision of helping operators enrich customers experience, via a showcase of the latest next generation mobile broadband technology to mobile operators in the region.”
LTE will truly revolutionize the region’s mobile market, changing the way businesses and individuals communicate.
The technology will unleash a plethora of new devices such as Internet telephones and videophones to end user services such as teleconferencing, telecommuting, to wider benefits in medical services such as remote diagnosis, interactive distance education, rich multimedia entertainment, digitally-controlled home appliances and much more.
“What’s more the Nokia Siemens Networks LTE proposition is based on software upgrades to current 3G networks that are currently deployed by a majority of regional mobile operators,” added Waraich
At the heart of the Nokia Siemens Networks’ solution is its Flexi Base Station that supports multiple technologies from GSM/EDGE and WCDMA/HSPA to LTE on a single platform.
Being only 20% of the size and weight of a conventional base station, it is energy efficient and designed to minimize the overall cost of network operation and maintenance.

Wateen Binds Login IDs with MAC Addresses

In an effort to completely eliminate the chances of multiple use of Login IDs, Wateen has decided to bind login IDs with MAC address of its CPEs (or WiMAX devices) – meaning that one login ID will be applicable for one CPE only.
Earlier, Wateen had made multiple efforts for restricting multiple usage of its account, i.e. one account used by more than one customers, however, this step will leave no chance for multiple customers to use one ID.
By the way, Media Access Control or MAC address is supposed to be unique identifier for network cards/devices across the globe.
However, strategy adopted to implement this policy is causing trouble to the customers. Wateen is asking its customers to provide MAC address of their CPEs, so they can update their records and assign one particular ID for the CPE.
Wateen Wateen Binds Login IDs with MAC Addresses
After MAC binding, login page for Wateen services will no longer be required.

Warid Starts Charging Balance Inquiries

Warid has ultimately started charging balance inquiries made through *100# at 10 paisas plus tax (12 plus including tax). However, call summery will keep showing the remaining balances free of charge.
Warid was the only operator that wasn’t charging balance inquiries till now.
Recently Warid took back SMS delivery reports – while free balance inquiries and SMS delivery reports were unique identifiers of Warid, which are now taken back for un-told reasons.
P.S. Some users on 0321 code are also reporting that their balance inquires are not being charged, maybe due to flaw in system configuration as customer support has confirmed us that *100# is bing charged at 12 paisas per instruction.

Car DVD Buying Guide [Pakistan Focused]

Remember old good days; long drive or wading through busy streets in your car with music of your choice, making journey sweeter for you? Personally speaking, I remember buying Sonic, Eagle Stereo or a TDK audio cassette in Rs 25-35 (I personally preferred TDK, though).
A quality car Cassette player used to cost around 1500-5000 and the variation was, of course there due to difference in quality and features.
Technology kept on developing at a faster rate and car Cassette players were consistently replaced with better technologically-driven gadgets like CAR CD players then CAR CD Changers, Video CD’s, DVD’s and now DVD Player with multifunctional data input and connectivity support like USB flash disks Memory Cards, Wifi and Blue tooth
Markets these days are flooded with automobile audio video gadgets. Companies offer competitive prices with maximum functions and connectivity support and quite astonishingly prices are not that high either.
Prices start from Rs 3000 and go upward to Rs 20,000. If you visit your local automobile audio video shop or market, you might get DVD players with offering maximum functions and connectivity support in reasonable price starting from Rs.3000 – Rs. 20,000.
But China in this field has also excelled and people literally ask for a Chinese device as it offers maximum functions on unbelievably low prices. China made Car DVD players are also equipped with Touch screens and built in analog TV Tuner. Prices tend to differ from company to company depending upon features and functionality offered.
Car DVD Chines 300x225 Car DVD Buying Guide [Pakistan Focused]What comes with new China made CAR DVD player?
  • Box
  • Car DVD player position Lock, in local language known as “Kara”
  • Remote
  • Manual
  • Sometimes with Headphone (this depends on the manufacturer offer)
But wait a minute, before you buy make sure:
  • You have visited market to get a pulse of industry and well aware of price variations in different models. A low quality purchased set of DVD player may land you in trouble , so be watchful about market price and do not hesitate to spend an extra dime for reliable quality.
  • Make it a point that you are the first user of DVD player which you have purchased out of your precious money. You can easily check it by viewing” Lens Locked Screws” on the top of DVD player. This shows that DVD player has not been used so far.
  • Thoroughly check its functions.
  • Check its album shifting button; it is however quite a hassle to locate that button in Chinese made DVD players but Chinese manufacturers have acknowledged this flaw and they are trying their best to rectify the short coming.
  • If incase album shifting is not available or not discovered. Then “RDM” button can provide you function of shuffling songs with minimum numbers to maximum numbers.
  • If it is touch screen car DVD player then make sure that its touch screen is not having pixel fault. I.e. green dots, white dots, or some part of touch screen might not be working.
  • Features like plugging in USB flash disk or Memory card have not been very reliable; spare some time to properly check its functionality.
  • The best way to avoiding dust or lens disturbance is to buy Car DVD player with the inside “DVD” or hidden “DVD” disc jacket. Ok let’s make it simpler, if you are able to insert DVD behind the face plate, then it would be hidden “DVD” disc jacket. Because this helps in avoiding dust to disturb the lens.
  • Ensure its reading of every format like WMA, MP3, and DVD. For this you can take your own CD/DVD catalogue with you to check.
  • Check Radio, radios sometime create noise when car is driven or at least their FM signals remain weak at times;try replacing your car RF antenna which will hopefully fix the problem
To cut it short, one must embrace new technological advancement without any grudge and keep one’s pace with fast changing technological scene around the world. However up-to date knowledge in this regard is a must.

Telenor Pakistan Supporting Pakistan’s 1st Hybrid Car

Telenor Pakistan, as one of the project sponsors, has provided financial assistance to Pak Wheelers, a group of 11 engineering students of EME College, NUST, Islamabad to build Prodigy, Pakistan’s first hybrid car.
The vehicle will represent Pakistan in the Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2010 to be held in Malaysia in July. Telenor Pakistan will provide Team Leader Syed Hassaan Ali with international communication facilities during the competition to enable him to share live updates.
The single-seater Prodigy has a gasoline-run combustion engine that works in conjunction with electric motors that makes it run more efficiently. It harvests energy lost during breaking and reuses it for moving. Energy is stored in super capacitor banks through a micro controller based Energy Management Unit. Prodigy has a fiber glass body and can go up to 250 km in just one liter of fuel.
Affan Haider, Head of Corporate Communications & Responsibility, Telenor Pakistan while commenting on the project said: “Telenor Pakistan appreciates Pak Wheelers commitment behind Prodigy. We have always encouraged innovative ideas, especially those that are environmentally responsible. With projects ranging from low energy lighting solutions for our offices to establishing cellular sites that run on solar energy, Telenor continue to promote a greener, healthier and eco-friendly Pakistan.”
When Pak Wheelers began their senior year project, they had a commitment to an environment friendly cause but little financial resources. Their goal was to hoist Pakistan’s flag in the Shell Eco- Marathon Asia 2010. Helping them in their aim are sponsors from the corporate sector that have provided financial support for Prodigy.
Telenor Pakistan has been a responsible corporate organization since its inception. In addition to a number of initiatives, Telenor Pakistan recently took up the challenge of changing perceptions and lives of persons with disabilities through its flagship corporate responsibility program, Khuddar Pakistan. With immense support from the community, these efforts have translated into sustainable corporate responsibility initiatives.
Telenor Pakistan also extends its support to environment friendly initiatives. Recently, Telenor Pakistan employees in Islamabad planted trees in Margalla National Park and pledged a second round in the monsoon season to plant and care for another 1,500 trees in collaboration with CDA.

Laptop Cooling Pads and Their Benifits

Laptops, a status symbol not long ago, have assumed the status of a house hold name now as people have become increasingly dependent on this tool due to its easy portability.
Today, laptop users are interested in high resolution laptops, which provide maximum entertainment features including but not limited to high speed processors, dedicated high speed graphic cards and wide screen displays.
These enhancements have their worrying aspects as well. High room temperatures and sometimes due to lack of high heat dissipation laptops figure out with problems like restarting on heating or shutting down or any other malfunctioning.
Problem gets worse if you are using laptop as your primary computing device. In such situations, cooling pad is an accessory for laptops that helps reduce their operating temperature.
Normally used when the laptop’s fan device is unable to sufficiently cool the laptop, a cooling pad may house active or passive cooling methods and rests beneath the laptop.
Active coolers move air or liquid to direct heat away from the laptop quickly, while passive methods may rely on thermally conductive materials or increasing passive airflow.
These cooling pads are a must for any laptop keeping in view the fact that they are not expensive and they save expensive motherboards and any other part of lap tops from being malfunctioned. So, one may safely draw the conclusion that this small device helps saving precious motherboards or processors.
The users in this way are saved from the hassle of their laptops going out of order and losing important data during the process.
Two types of laptops cooling pads are available in the market so far and these are:
  • Cooling Pads with Fans
  • Cooling pads without Fans
Cooling pads that use fans consist of fans ranging from 1 to 3 or 4 fans on a single pad meant to be used for a single laptop. Cooling pads with fans are made up of plastic, aluminum or heat dissipation materials like heat sink of aluminum alloys. Cooling pads with fans are usually plug-in to laptop usb port by having usb cable, in which one end may be of usb port and other is power cord, like laptop charger.
While cooling pads without fans does not require any connectivity thorough usb or something else, they absorb the heat within them.
Selection of cooling pads must be made wisely and based on important factors like size of laptop and its usage must. As it is said in proverbial English the size does MATTER, the larger the size the larger the cooling pad and vice versa.
Please remember some cooling pads offer the speed choice as a button is placed in them to determine/vary the speed but this feature is not available I all cooling fans. Fans speeds are also adjustable in some cooling pads by using fan buttons.
Some cooling pads also represent different LEDs like POWER ON, FAN Speed functions. Though many cooler pads support the use of a power adapter, they typically run on power drawn through one of the laptop’s USB ports. Many cooler pads therefore compensate with a built-in USB hub. Other advanced features include card readers for various forms of media such as key drives, memory cards, and 2.5″ Laptop hard disk drives.
What to consider before buying?
  • Compatibility of cooling pad with the size of your lap top
  • Decision to buy a typical type of cooling pad i.e. Fan cooling pads or heat absorbing cooling pads.
  • Speed adjustment button. This feature may not be available in all pads, so watch out for the one.
  • LED indicators.
  • Ergonomic Shaped.
  • USB cable.
  • FAN speed like 1500 RPM.
  • Appropriate and not exceedingly high noise level like 25 DBA.
Availability in Pakistan:
Laptop cooling pad is available online in Pakistan ranging from PKR 999/- to PKR 6,000 onSymbios.pk and homeshopping.pkPrice variation could be a possibility duringmarket survey in order to buy the device. (Prices are subject to change)
