Sony Ericsson announces LiveView

Sometimes we hear about new gadgets and can’t decide if it is the coolest or lamest thing we’ve ever seen. It can seem like such an awesome idea, but is it something you’d actually use?

This was our first reaction to the Sony Ericsson LiveView, although the more we think about it, the more we think it’s an awesome idea.

The LiveView is a device with a 1.3 inch 128×128 OLED screen which displays data from the apps on your Android device. It connects via bluetooth and in addition to being used as a remote control for your music player; it can display RSS and Twitter feeds, calendar information as well as missed/incoming calls and SMS messages. The LiveView will also come with a very useful ‘find your phone’ feature. Given that this is a bluetooth device, that is only going to useful for finding it in your house rather than if it gets stolen, but it is still quite a nice feature.

In addition to everything it can do out of the box, the LiveView can be enabled on any Android app built for Android 2.0 or above. This means that the power of the device will increase as more developers get on board and add support for the LiveView.

Due to the fact LiveView uses bluetooth connect, it should work with just about any device running Android 2.x. You won’t have to have a Sony Ericson Android phone to be able to use it. At least, that’s the theory – at the moment Sony Ericsson has only got the Samsung Glalaxy S and the HTC Desire listed as compatible non Sony Ericsson phones.

There’s definitely still a part of us which wonders what we’d actually use it for that would be worth whatever Sony Ericsson decides to charge for it. That said, the potential of it is pretty exciting and it will definitely be worth watching this space!

Skype and Facebook to Announce Partnership [RUMOR]

Facebook and Skype are working on a deal that would integrate Facebook Connect with Skype accounts; All ThingsD has learned citing sources familiar with the situation.

ATD has managed to get a hold of a screenshot showing the new features in action: once you connect Skype withFacebook, you’d be able to SMS, chat with or call your Facebook friends directly from Skype. You should also be able to login into Skype with your Facebook credentials.

The new features should go live in Skype 5.0 when the new version goes out of beta in a couple of weeks.

It’s a logical step for both companies. Facebook’s chat capabilities are somewhat limited compared to Google Talk, which is deeply integrated with Gmail, and offers voice and video chat capabilities. Enabling new ways to communicate with yourFacebook friends is definitely one of Facebook’s goals. Skype, on the other hand, will be very happy to extend its user base with Facebook’s 500+ million users.

If the rumor turns out to be true, it would be interesting to see whether Facebook will also integrate Skype features into its web interface, or perhaps its mobile application.

Official: Easypaisa will Offer Savings/Insurance product

As we have reported before, it is now official that Telenor will offer saving/insurance accounts through Easypaisa, company’s mobile banking brand.

Telenor in a statement today has said that it has received a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Mobile Money for the Unbanked (MMU) Fund. With the help of the grant, Telenor Pakistan will introduce a savings/ insurance product under the umbrella of its easypaisa services.

MMU grants are awarded to support commercially viable and sustainable mobile-operator-led projects that accelerate the deployment of mobile banking services to the unbanked. This year only seven mobile operators have been selected from around the world for the grants based on their financial services.

Gavin Krugel, Director GSMA speaking about the MMU Fund said: “Between now and the end of 2011 millions of consumers are expected to directly benefit from mobile money services launched with the support of the Fund – that is 170 million customers at the base of the economic pyramid and who previously lacked access to financial services, from 19 operators in Latin America, Africa, and Asia.”

Commenting on the grant, Roar Bjaerum, Vice President Financial Services, Telenor Pakistan said: “We are delighted to have received the MMU grant. Easypaisa has very quickly gained popularity among all segments of society. Through it we have moved over PKR2 billion through more than a million transactions. Considering that only 12% of the population in the country has access to banking services, the MMU grant is going to help us develop a savings and insurance product that is tailored to the needs of the financially excluded.”

easypaisa is a diverse suite of financial services launched by Telenor Pakistan and Tameer Microfinance Bank with the aim to provide mobile banking services to the unbanked people of Pakistan.

The MMU Fund is administered by the GSMA Foundation Inc and supported by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It works with mobile operators, banks, microfinance institutions, government and development organizations to encourage the expansion of reliable and affordable mobile financial services to base-of-the-pyramid unbanked customers.

NSN Demos its LTE Products in Pakistan

Nokia Siemens Network has demonstrated the Long-Term Evolution (LTE) products in a Road show in Pakistan. Earlier this month, NSN had showcased its third generations products in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Egypt and Morocco.

During the demonstration Nokia Siemens Network’s Country Director in Pakistan said that the timing of our road show could not be more opportune.

“With Pakistan’s telecommunication industry witnessing strong growth, the need for a richer communications services in Pakistan is raising the demand for 3G and 4G. New services now and in the future require higher speeds at an affordable cost.”

It is clear that broadband can change Pakistan as it connects rural businesses and consumers to the rest of the world, enables new ways of doing business and adds agility to urban enterprises.

In fact as per a Broadband Survey conducted by Nokia Siemens Networks in 2009, the desire to use mobile and data applications in Pakistan- surfing the web and application downloading – reaches up to 55 percent of the population.

Usage of audio /music mobile downloading alone has shown an interest rate of 88 percent.

LTE is the de-facto evolution path of the 3G mobile standard that is based on a full flat IP architecture and is optimized for data and multimedia traffic.

Having demonstrated the world’s first LTE demo with data speeds up to 160 Mb/s, Nokia Siemens Networks has been at the forefront of developments in this space.

In Middle East Africa specifically, Nokia Siemens Networks was behind the region’s first LTE contract with Zain Bahrain. “Leading the evolution of broadband technology means our customers will be the first to benefit,” added Waraich.

“Today, we are reinforcing our vision of helping operators enrich customers experience, via a showcase of the latest next generation mobile broadband technology to mobile operators in the region.”

LTE will truly revolutionize the region’s mobile market, changing the way businesses and individuals communicate.

Wateen Binds Login IDs with MAC Addresses

In an effort to completely eliminate the chances of multiple use of Login IDs, Wateen has decided to bind login IDs with MAC address of its CPEs (or WiMAX devices) – meaning that one login ID will be applicable for one CPE only.

Earlier, Wateen had made multiple efforts for restricting multiple usage of its account, i.e. one account used by more than one customers, however, this step will leave no chance for multiple customers to use one ID.

By the way, Media Access Control or MAC address is supposed to be unique identifier for network cards/devices across the globe.

However, strategy adopted to implement this policy is causing trouble to the customers. Wateen is asking its customers to provide MAC address of their CPEs, so they can update their records and assign one particular ID for the CPE.

After MAC binding, login page for Wateen services will no longer be required.

Warid Starts Charging Balance Inquiries

Warid has ultimately started charging balance inquiries made through *100# at 10 paisas plus tax (12 plus including tax). However, call summery will keep showing the remaining balances free of charge.

Warid was the only operator that wasn’t charging balance inquiries till now.

Recently Warid took back SMS delivery reports – while free balance inquiries and SMS delivery reports were unique identifiers of Warid, which are now taken back for un-told reasons.

P.S. Some users on 0321 code are also reporting that their balance inquires are not being charged, maybe due to flaw in system configuration as customer support has confirmed us that *100# is bing charged at 12 paisas per instruction.

Telenor Pakistan Supporting Pakistan’s 1st Hybrid Car

Telenor Pakistan, as one of the project sponsors, has provided financial assistance to Pak Wheelers, a group of 11 engineering students of EME College, NUST, Islamabad to build Prodigy, Pakistan’s first hybrid car.

The vehicle will represent Pakistan in the Shell Eco-Marathon Asia 2010 to be held in Malaysia in July. Telenor Pakistan will provide Team Leader Syed Hassaan Ali with international communication facilities during the competition to enable him to share live updates.

The single-seater Prodigy has a gasoline-run combustion engine that works in conjunction with electric motors that makes it run more efficiently. It harvests energy lost during breaking and reuses it for moving. Energy is stored in super capacitor banks through a micro controller based Energy Management Unit. Prodigy has a fiber glass body and can go up to 250 km in just one liter of fuel.

Affan Haider, Head of Corporate Communications & Responsibility, Telenor Pakistan while commenting on the project said: “Telenor Pakistan appreciates Pak Wheelers commitment behind Prodigy. We have always encouraged innovative ideas, especially those that are environmentally responsible. When Pak Wheelers began their senior year project, they had a commitment to an environment friendly cause but little financial resources. Google Extends the Street View Worldwide With User Photos

Google Street View is a feature available on Google Mapping products where users can switch to a view consisting of manually taken 360° angled street/road photos with 9 cameras at 2.5 m elevation on a moving vehicle.

These photos are then processed to make a panoramic view to provide a feeling of being at that place. Due to privacy matters, faces and vehicles registration plates are blurred during the process.

Launched in May 2007, Street View for Google Maps brought huge excitement to users around the world. Initiated from Google’s home country US, covering various cities & territories one by one, it is now covering nearly half of the world with its 26th update on 8th June.

For rest of the world with no Street View coverage, the only option was to wait. But with latest enhancement in photos layer for Maps which is mainly sourced from Panoramio as well as from Flikr has provided a great work-around to Street View. At these sites, photos are uploaded by their owners and then geo-tagged according to their focused shoot.

Photo layer has also been linked with Street View’s famous Pegman. Dragging the Pegman on the map or clicking on any photo in enabled layer of photos will turn maps into user photo viewer along with optional drag arrows around the picture where available depending upon number of pictures available for that particular place.

Mobile Edition of PTA’s Website Launched

PTA has launched the mobile edition of its website, available in Wireless Application Protocol or WAP, mobile edition will allow cell phone phone users to access the optimized version of PTA website through their mobile handsets.

Mobile users can now access PTA’s website here: http://wap.pta.gov.pk (will open in WAP browsers)

WAP version of website contains all the information available in regular edition but in optimized form, based on simple-text and smaller images, to help mobile users load the information quicker with little consumption of bandwidth.

It may be noted that PTA had launched Urdu version of its website recently to facilitate a large segment of the population having less familiarity with English contents.

The mobile edition (m-edition) would enable telecom consumers to access the available information regarding PTA activities, decisions, policies and even lodge complaints through their mobile handsets.

Basic DSL Connection Troubleshooting Tips

It usually happens that we end up hearing those routine tips from our ISP support guys whenever we are stuck with browsing or downloading. So how about creating a check list of those usual problems and try to debug them ourselves before bugging the Support team?

Note: If you are on Wateen, we did this post for basic trouble shooting here

Whenever you feel like your internet isn’t working, start debugging in following pattern:

Ping your modem/router: Ping is a dos command that suggests or finds out availability of connection between two computing devices. To ping your router/modem do following

Open DOS, by going into start menu and typing “cmd”
on DOS shell, type this command: ping 192.168.0.1 and press enter

192.168.0.1 is usually router/modem IP – but that’s not necessary, its IP can be 192.168.1.1, in such situations, it is good to find out router’s IP when internet is working well. You can ask support to help you finding the router IP.

if your ping command gives following output:

Pinging 192.168.0.1 with 32 bytes of data:
Request time out
Request time out
Request time out
Request time out

It is apparent that connection between your laptop/PC and router is lost. Your cable maybe is faulty or otherwise lose-connect. Try re-plugging the cable – dusting it is even better.

If pinging your router gives something like following:

Pinging 192.168.0.1 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.0.1: bytes=32 time=2446ms TTL=247
Reply from 192.168.0.1: bytes=32 time=1932ms TTL=247
Reply from 192.168.0.1: bytes=32 time=3427ms TTL=247

it means you are connected with router, and the problem is between router and ISP. Possible problems can be:

Your telephone line is maybe dead
Splitter may have gone bad
Worst: Your ISP has ditched you, so better wait for them to come back live. Calling support and cursing them is another better idea

Pinging your ISP

If your phone line is good and so is splitter, you can try pinging your ISP, here is how we do it:

During peace days, when your internet is running well, you can find out your ISP’s DNS server by following command

Open DOS shell by clicking start menu and typing CMD
On DOS shell type this command: ipconfig/all

this command will have many values amongst DNS server IP (likely to be the second last line of output)

Now you have DNS server of your ISP (this is usually valid for home users, corporate users who have in-house DNS servers better contact their network admins)

Now again ping this ip by typing “ping DNS_Server_IP” in DOS shell

If its pinging then your ISP is up – everything is good but the website you are visiting is either down or its a bad URL, so better trying more than one website before reaching a conclusion.

Distortion in the Phone line after DSL installed?

You might have observed distortion or the noise in phone line has increased after DSL connection installation. If situation arises, below mentioned steps are necessary to rectify the situation.

Connect phone with direct line (without splitter in between) and check the dial tone and noise.
If no noise without splitter, then you have figured out the problem. Go for replacing splitter first.

Noise problem generally arises due to malfunctioning of splitter; if such is the case with you, replace splitter and then see the difference

IP conflict problem

IP conflict problem is generally experienced if more than one computers are used with same DSL connection. The explanation is that in this case both computers share the same IP address. If your IP is statically assigned then you might have to check settings of your modem or router also ensure about local configuration with unique IP address.

Otherwise, in case of dynamic IP, common trouble shoot steps like restarting your modem or router will work and new IP will be assigned automatically. There are other suggestions for resolving the problem like IPconfig/release and IPconfig/renew commands which can be done by typing windows DOS. (However, discretion on the part of user is advised in this regard)

Other Troubleshoot steps / scenarios:

After resetting modem, DSL is up but internet is not working. Sometimes it happens, just 0.1 percent times usually, that router/modem settings are restored to default (or factory setting) after restart/power failure. DSL setting manual will help you through in settings like VPI/VCI addresses, encapsulation types, user name and passwords; DSL provider helpline may also be used in this regard.

Every time, settings memorizing/ storing problem. There are some cases, when routers / modems are unable to store settings that have been saved for establishing successful DSL connection. This problem can be fixed by visiting modem / router support website for Firmware upgrades.

Please note that, firmware upgrade is crucial process and may cause damage to the device (especially in case of power failure during the upgrade). You are referred to firmware upgrade manual as author is not responsible for any damage done during the process. It could be available on OEM support websites

My DSL connection gets disconnected automatically, and too often!

It has been observed that the root cause for this problem is the Static Discharge. Though, there might be many reasons for this, but common issue is static discharge problem.

This fact may be verified easily by checking the dial tone of your phone. If it’s active with noise, noise could be the problem, try fixing joints in cable – or if you are lucky to have contacts with lineman, ask him to get your line connected shortest available PTCL switch.

Now back to static discharge, it comes into play when you observe that dial tone is coming consistently with sharp sound and there is no noise. The solution requires connecting your phone with main telephone line; in the first place make sure no splitter is used during the process and then dial the number which gives you two way connectivity. It means both listener and speaker are able to listen to each other.

After observing for some time you will notice stability in the DSL and continuity in line as no line will be dropped. If issues remain, then requesting DSL team for trouble shooting might do the trick for you.

Internet Downtime and Penalties: PTA’s Definitions

PTA in its recent RFP for award of internet services contract wrote something like this

Maximum Allowable Downtime (Downtime is considered when Both Wireless & DSL are down or degraded services defined below) in one complain or Day will be 30 Minutes.
Downtime is considered if there’s a 50 % packet loss in case of Internet bandwidth and degraded is considered if there’s more than 3 % Packet loss which will be checked by unit of customer and third party software like MRTG.

Apparently – by this authority means that 30 minutes of downtime (per day) is allowable, anything beyond this will be penalized – that’s pretty kind of PTA I would say.

They didn’t stop here though. They have actually put in the penalties in case of downtime. Let’s have a look!

Most you people must be wondering that what’s so wrong about it? There is nothing wrong in here fellas, but just think that how much downtime you get at your own homes? Got my point!!.

Now, tell me how much penalty do you put in on your service provider for the downtime during the month. Zero % I am sure.

But don’t you think that PTA should start similar penalty kind of service contract for customers too. Am I right?

We receive emails from PTCL and Wateen customers, who are suffering down time for days – but there is no one to hear their pleas. And look at PTA, its securing its account so bluntly but no rule or policy for customers.

Walton Board is Stealing Passwords, Hosting a Yahoo Phishing Page

Emails ask users to verify their Yahoo accounts, and pose as to be sent from Yahoo. However, the page that asks for user-name and password is hosted on Walton Cant Board’s official website.
This incident is a clear evidence of lack of interest from government and semi government organizations relating to information technology. This is merely because of those tech-ignorant bosses, who leave IT work on their webmasters, who are hired on references and not on merit.
By the way, phising is chargeable offense, and an Application to FIA will be enough to take the culprits to the jail. All evidences are provided below.

InstaPhone Delaying Salaries for 20 Months, Valuing Rs. 45 Million

Other day we posted about PAC Ordering FBR to Lodge FIR against 4 Telecom companies, and we witnessed a lot of comments from people who used to serve in Pakcom Ltd. (Instaphone).

If you ask me what happened to InstaPhone, and how come (once) largest networked mobile phone operator vanished from the scene? Then wait for few days, as there is a detailed report being prepared on this alone.

This post is about those employees who are waiting for their salaries, provident funds, and other benefits that are pending payment from InstaPhone for almost twenty months now.

Most of these employees were served termination letter on August 1^st, 2008. While their salaries for at least 3 months were held by the company. Because these employees were terminated, so their claims included provident fund, settlement amounts and other pending dues.

These employees, few of which served InstaPhone for over decade – are still jobless. One can imagine the severed situation so no further words on their miseries.

For records, Arfeen Group had bought InstaPhone from Millicom, however, their dispute with PTA over frequency and payments resulted into termination of license. InstaPhone’s appeal against PTA’s decision was dismissed by Islamabad High Court, while now company is planning to go to Supreme Court – anytime soon.

In short, InstaPhone doesn’t exist today, when it comes to operations, offices or any other business activity. Company has just 5 working employees.

We took this query to Mr. Javaid Firoz, CEO of InstaPhone – to know the status of pending salaries.

Mr. Firoz was pretty clear that company has to pay the salaries of its ex-employees. However, he said that there should be money available in company account to pay liabilities. Currently, he said, company has nothing in hands – to entertain these hard working employees.

668 Has Served 16 Million SIM Verification Requests

PTA launched 668 SIM information System, a service that can tell number of SIMs issued against any CNIC through SMS or 668 website, has served around 16 million requests, as told by industry sources.

ProPakistani had unveiled 668 services and broke the story on September 17^th, 2009 – which was replicated throughout the country in print and web media; however, PTA officially launched this service on October 15^th, 2009.

Since then, a total of 11 million SMS requests and 5 million web requests were entertained by 668.

Sources revealed ProPakistani that a total of 0.90 million complaints were lodged in response to 668 information system, which reported total of 2.38 million irregular connections.

Out of 2.38 million SIMs, 0.90 SIMs have been regularized, another 0.5 million were blocked and around 0.92 million SIMs are pending regularization.

668 is a good effort by PTA for elimination of illegal SIMs, but maybe not the best one.

Year in Review for Telecom Industry: 2009

Pakistan Telecom industry did pretty smooth in year 2009, despite very severe working conditions due to ongoing global recession, hiked inflation, tough competition, law and order situation in the country and increased saturation rate for cellular subscribers.

Growth in subscriber saw a decline when compared to previous years, but that’s understandable. It merits mentioning here that millions of connections went offline during 2009 due to their un-registered or fake registrations status.

Overall Telenor, Warid and Zong did well in terms of adding new customers, showing positive gain in market share. Telenor added 3.4 million customers, while Warid could grab 2 million. Zong stood third in race with 1.47 million customers during November 2008 to November 2009.

Telenor is currently second in terms of Market share, while Mobilink still being at top. Ufone slipped down to forth position with Warid ahead of it at 3rd.

White House Targets Mobile Users in Pakistan, Afghanistan

The White House said that it dubbed video clips of US President Barack Obama’s speech this week on Afghanistan into Arabic, Dari, Pashtu and Urdu for distribution on mobile devices. The White House, in a blog post, said Internet penetration in Afghanistan and Pakistan is relatively low, just two percent and 11 percent respectively, so it has intentions to reach masses through Mobile Phones.

White House blog said that the number of people in those countries with mobile devices is much higher – 52 percent of the 177 million people in Pakistan and 30 percent of the 28.4 million in Afghanistan. “Given this trend, we produced short video clips of the President’s segment to Afghans and had it dubbed in Arabic, Dari, Pashtu, and Urdu in order for them to be distributed locally on mobile devices,” the White House said.

“We’re hopeful that leveraging technology this way will help us achieve the president’s goal of increasing America’s security and undercutting the appeal of al Qaeda and other extremists through global engagement,” it said.

Earlier this year, the White House posted a video on its website featuring a simultaneous translation into Farsi of comments Obama made on Iran and a Farsi transcript of the remarks. Obama directed some of Tuesday’s speech to the Afghan people saying “America seeks an end to this era of war and suffering” and has “no interest in occupying your country.”

Intel Works with Pre-STEP to Promote Technology for Faculty Members

Intel Pakistan recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a consortium partner in Pre-STEP (the Pre-service Teacher Education Program). The agreement has been made to launch a technology program in Government colleges of Pakistan with a vision to improve the basic education by strengthening teacher training institutes.

Pre-STEP is a five-year, national program led by the Academy for Educational Development (AED), with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The program is designed to improve the quality of basic education in Pakistan by improving teacher preparation practices and strengthening the capacity of up to 75 teacher training institutes and 15 universities. This program will also provide an opportunity for teacher educators to learn about, practice and make plans to use active teaching approaches.

Under this agreement, Intel Pakistan and Pre-STEP will develop and pilot a technology course, with the objective that trainee teachers receive hands on experience with technology aided teaching methodologies during their coursework at the college or university where they are enrolled.

“Intel aims to support trainee teachers to learn about key 21st century skills through the implementation of the Intel Teach Program,” said Ashar H. Zaidi, Country Manager, Intel Pakistan. “With the help of Pre-STEP & USAID, Intel aspires to help student teachers to gain first-hand experience with technology. This will not only breed creativity in a more productive learning environment, but also endorse their careers as teachers in the future.”

The Intel Teach program is designed to enable teachers to effectively use technology to enhance student learning in the digital world. It has evolved into a laudable venture that has achieved many milestones. Launched in the year 2002, the program has won much acclaim in Pakistan as well as the international market.

Intel to date has trained 220,000 teachers in Pakistan, reaching out to over 60 cities and districts of Pakistan. Brain cancer trends not linked to cell phones

Here's one way to figure out whether cell phones are causing brain tumors: Look at the incidence of brain cancer over a 30-year span that covers the period from before cell phones came into general use until today, when they're ubiquitous.

The results, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, involving an analysis of 60,000 brain cancer victims from Scandinavian countries, are encouraging.

While cell phone use jumped dramatically from 1974 to 2003, the period which the study covers, overall brain cancer trends in the population didn't follow suit. For some areas, brain cancer rates were stable or trended down. For some, the modest increase in cancer incidence had already been underway before cell phones came into use, indicating other causes are likely at fault.

In any event, no radical jump in brain tumors was detected over the years analyzed, something you'd expect if cell phones were really causing a lot of medical problems.

Of course, this doesn't mean that cell phones don't contribute to or encourage brain tumor growth in some fashion, but it's likely that if they do, the effect is "small to moderate." It's also possible that cell phones impact the growth of tumors, but only over a very long exposure time, more than five or ten years -- or that cell phones encourage the growth of different kinds of tumors or only in certain types of users (such as children or the elderly).
